Replacing the area protection or upgrading the existing one?

When it comes to perimeter protection, there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution. Each site has its own conditions, risk levels and requirements – which is why it is important to start at the right end: with a thorough assessment of the existing one to determine whether it is time to change or upgrade the perimeter protection.

Many people think that a completely new fence or a major rebuild is always the only option. But the truth is that it is often possible to reinforce, complement or upgrade parts of an existing perimeter fence instead of demolishing and replacing everything. This saves time, resources and money – and can significantly improve safety.

When is a completely new area protection needed?

In some cases, a complete replacement is the best way forward, for example when:

  • the fence is severely damaged or has reached its technical lifetime
  • the design no longer meets modern safety requirements
  • business has changed so much that completely new solutions are required

A completely new system could then be both more economical and more sustainable in the long run.

When is it enough to upgrade?

In many situations it is smarter to:

  • reinforce posts or sections
  • supplement with climbing protection or HVM solutions
  • upgrading gates or locks
  • install sensor-based systems, alarms or CCTV
  • improve visual demarcation protection where it is lacking

Often, the basics – poles, route, terrain adaptation – are already good. Then a targeted upgrade can provide the same level of safety improvement at a fraction of the cost.

The right choice starts with the right analysis

The key is to always start with a site survey and risk assessment. By analyzing point by point – climbing risk, attack resistance, visibility, access points, vehicle risks – it is possible to determine what really needs to be improved.

Sometimes small adjustments are enough. In other cases, a major rethink is needed. But the decision should always be based on facts, not assumptions.

Don’t waste money – invest smart

The biggest pitfall when working with area protection is spending money on the wrong measure.
By first finding out which parts of the protection are weak, you can invest where it has the greatest effect – instead of replacing everything without real need.
